‘Imitation’ is the premier solo show from Lucy Sparrow. It is the art-world turned soft and subverted into a comedic look at how craft meets conceptual. Ranging from the works of Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin to Mondrian and Grayson Perry, Lucy Sparrow is taking the successful and making it her own. ‘Imitation’ is a homage in part to the original ‘Sensation’ show which exploded onto the art scene in September 1997.
Enthralled and inspired by Saatchi’s ‘Sensation’ Show as a young art student, Lucy Sparrow has created a respected body of work in celebration to her childhood heroes, whilst adding a fine cynical twist of humour that she has become known for ever since emerging onto the London art scene. With rumours of a full-size shark immortalized in felt and woollen fabrics and a knitted Emin bed, ‘Imitation’ promises to deliver a grand oeuvre with the utmost flattery. Where else could you see a murderess immortalised Warhol style?
A bright, bold and sensational first show will pull you in with its satirical observations and sheer wonder.
Ever since she fell hard for the tiny yet detailed cans of oysters and green beans that populated the kitchen in her sister’s dollshouse Lucy Sparrow has been fascinated with unusually sized everyday objects and packaging. Picking up coloured chalks and papier maiche in her early years, she quickly moved on after discovering her destined medium, felt. The scissors, needles and ideas flew almost faster than her fingers could keep up and soon the world possessed a giant Gameboy and a life size felt AK47.
Looking to subvert the harmful and celebrate the anthropomorphism of the every day in soft sculpture, Lucy’s work has found critical acclaim in the underground art scene, having exhibited with some of the best known street artists in the UK. As well having sold art extensively through-out London and Brighton Lucy has also steadily under taken more and more commission work for clients such as Tesco, private collectors and galleries.
This is Lucy’s first solo show.Posted on February 20, 2012 with 6 notes
